Asynchronous looping for live improvisation

experiments with a live-sampling max patch.

A demonstration of the Max patch being used to loop vocal samples.

This is a max patch designed for using live in performance with an instrumentalist. The performer in charge of the Max patch not only controls the recording of new loops, but also the playback gain of each loop by scrolling through them in a continuous scale, as well as controlling the master volume of the patch. The patch is designed for use with an XBox controller because of the controller’s expressive capabilities.

A short clip for the original performance at the EUMTS concert. The use of the patch with a weightier, acoustic piano sound and denser harmonies led to a very different soundscape.

The patch was originally designed for use in a concert held by the Edinburgh University Music Technology Society, and me and Andreas have developed our initial performance in this gig through other recordings and performances. Our work at EUMTS continued with the Aquordion.
